You Already Did

This piece is my nod to the late-20th century world of band music that forms an important part of my musical heritage. As a high-school oboist, I absorbed those sounds: the liquid woodwind whirls and cascades, the sonorous brass chords, the pointed staccato of the full ensemble, the prominence of percussion. I cast these sounds in the active sections that open and close the piece. Both sections share musical material, although the closing section more strongly rhythmic. In between is a more lyrical melodic unfolding, mostly unaccompanied. While often soft rather than loud, the music maintains a forward motion that, to my ear, is a delightful aspect of the sound of a large ensemble of winds.
