A Winter Carol (2012) is a setting from Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost. The text is full of vivid winter images and sounds, laced together in a clear and masterful language. Although the melody and harmony are up-to-date, I have retained the bounce and directness of early English carols, especially in the vocal line. Above and around the voices is a flute and piano texture that furthers the forward motion by using fast notes, abrupt silences, flutey twitterings and injections of its own "merry notes".
