Red Sky Nocturne is a short character piece whose title (and perhaps, mood) was triggered by the intense redness that sometimes occurs in a late afternoon winter sky. The sound-world is vaguely reminiscent of jazz harmonies, although the piece itself is not jazz. Rather, the mild spikiness of such chords suffuses the piece with a poignant wistful quality — a quality that (to my ear, at least) reflects the title.
