Red Sky Opening

Red Sky Opening is a single-movement work in contrasting sections that explores a variety of tempos and piano-specific textures. The germ of the piece originated from the two chords that alternate in the first bars of Red Sky Nocturne. There is also a visual image at its core. To me, the fleeting red sky of both twilight and dawn suggest an opening into what will follow (night or day). The piece also “opens”: the hovering, suspended chords of the first section return at a higher register in the last section.
