The Keeper of Moon-Flowers

The Keeper of Moon-Flowers (2002) is a song cycle set to texts of the surrealist poet / sculptor Hans Arp (English translations by R. W. Last). They are all from Moonsand, a collection of German verse Arp wrote toward the end of his life. I have tried to write music that captures the 'dreamy' quality of the text: irregular length lines that ebb and flow, a supple and transparent texture, and a lack of literal repetition. I also feel that a sense of longing pervades all of the texts, and that spirit guided me in my musical choices. The voice and piano are very much equal partners in this musical journey. Sometimes the piano leads the voice, sometimes vice versa, with both commenting on the text in their own way.
