Mirrors

Mirrors (2006) is a concerto for double bass and orchestra. The title refers not only to the mirroring that occurs betweeen the soloist and the orchestra, but also to several technical aspects of the work. The piece is cast in two movements that mirror each other. The first movement begins in a quick tempo, and gradually moves toward music that is more still. The second movement begins slowly, then shifts to music of a more active texture. In addition to this formal scheme, pitch material is often mirrored: melodies that are palindromes (the same whether played forward or backward) and chords that are symmetrical (consisting of the same interval content whether viewed from the lowest to highest, or vice versa).
