The Midnight Cry is taken from Willima Walker's The Southern Harmony, originally published in 1854. Walker was the enditor and publisher of the collection, the real composer is unknown. As is typical of many pieces in that style, although the piece is “in A major”, the melody is pentatonic. The text retells the biblical story of the wise and foolish virgins.
