Give Us (1994) is based on a text from the Mayan Popol Vuh. The Popol Vuh has been referred to as “one of the great books about the creation of the world”. I have set this short prayer passage spoken by the first tribes and mountain peoples as they remembered their makers. There is a division in the piece where the question (“When it comes to the sowing . . .”) occurs, and the tempo slows. However, the tone of the whole suggested a very intense pleading, and I have tried to reflect that throughout the piece.
