Farewell Anthem

The anonymous composer of Farewell Anthem was most certainly aware of the vernacular repertory of the late 18th and early 19th century. The haunting minor / aeolian mode of the piece harkens back to the Scots-Irish influenced songs of Appalachia. The text speaks of a leaving of earthly sorrows, and a journey to a land “where trouble shall cease, and harmony shall abound”.
