Dusk Music II (1989) is one of a series of "in memoriam" pieces. All of the pieces in the series are "less than sunny" in mood, and all share certain musical motives ultimately derived from the numeric series: 8, 6, 7, 5, 6, 4, 5, 3, 4, 2, 3, 1. This work is a memoriam for Robert Mapplethorpe, and is scored for alto flute, viola and cello. An interesting technical feature of the music is a section where each player is given multiple lines of music, and must choose during the performance which line to play. This encourages more involvement from the players in the shaping of the piece than is usual, although the overall large form remains the same.
