This piece is a set of short character sketches for unaccompanied viola. All of the movements have fanciful titles, which relate to the many-hued colors produced by the viola. Although there are no true extended techniques, the full compliment of playing possibilities (pizzicato, harmonics, glissandi, sul ponticello, multiple stops) are used to convey the mien of the individual movements.
