But This Is This is a piece in one movement for organ and percussion. The sustained nature of the organ sound contrasts nicely with the infinite attack characteristics of the various percussion instruments, and this contrast is exploited throughout the piece. Much of the pitch material is based on the intervals of a minor 9th and a minor 3rd, giving a spacious but sometimes pungent sound to the music.

Formally, the gestures of the piece unfold rather abruptly, with little or no transition between ideas. This procedure gave rise to the title, which attempts to sum up the piece in a succinct fashion.
